Darkmane Must Be Stopped

12 July 2008

How does this exist?  Who at ESPN thought this was funny?

What would possess someone to use an annoying faux-villain doing a half-assed Wallace Shawn impersonation, to advertise their product?  Why is the conformity enforcer dressed like Gene Simmons?

Why is there a website with a blog, multimedia platforms and some sort of army?  Was this supposed to be a craze that was going to sweep the nation?

I will watch the X-Games, if it will get these commercials off my television set.

Brian DEEgan hahahaha!  Gold!  Comedy Gold!

Why? (The Big Lead)

Becks Going to Miami?

12 July 2008

Media-mogul Simon Fuller (creator of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) is David Beckham’s agent.  He also may be his business partner in a new MLS franchise.  Beckham, as part of his contract, has the option to buy an MLS team after 2011.

Sources believe that the two are scouting Miami as a possible destination.  The deal could include a soccer-specific stadium, built on the site of the Orange Bowl with the city paying for half of it.

Miami is traditionally an awful city for professional sports (see Marlins).  But, it has a large Hispanic community, British ex-pats and a tradition as a soccer hotbed in the United States.  With Beckham’s drawing power and Fuller’s promotional prowess, this venture would likely be successful.  Given the favorable climate and the relative proximity to South America and to Europe, they would attract more top stars as well.

Brad Guzan to Aston Villa

12 July 2008

Aston Villa have purchased American goalkeeper Brad Guzan in a £2m deal.  The deal remains dependent on Guzan attaining a work-permit, which submarined an identical move in January.

Guzan, 23, was the 2007 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for Chivas USA.  He also has nine caps for the U.S. National Team.  Guzan had been linked to other European clubs, such as  Celtic, Liverpool and Arsenal.  Guzan will join American counterparts Tim Howard, Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller as first-choice Premier League goalkeepers.

The signing squashes rumors of Villa signing last year’s loanee Scott Carson from Liverpool.  As Carson would cost two to three times Guzan’s fee, with no discernible difference in talent, it’s not a bad bit of business by Martin O’Neill.
