The Red Sox have signed first baseman Sean Casey to a 1-year deal, estimated to be worth between $700,000 and $800,000 depending on the source.
Casey, 33, is a career .301 hitter with a .366 OBP. He was the starting first-baseman for Detroit last season where he hit .296 with a .353 OBP.
He is a fine hitter and average defender. The only deficiency in his game is the impotent power numbers, 4HR and a .393 Slugging Percentage last season. However, in his role as a backup first baseman and left-handed bat off the bench, that issue should not prove significant.
At the risk of offending the Sabermetric Gods, he will also be a great clubhouse chemistry guy and glad-hand the media to take pressure off other players.
He’s hungry for a ring, and he comes at a cheap price.
Good deal for the Red Sox.
