Moneyball Man On the Move

Two weeks after losing their best pitcher Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks, the Oakland A’s have traded away their best hitter as well, sending Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox for three minor leaguers.
Swisher, one of the players featured by Michael Lewis in his book Moneyball, is a 27 year-old switch-hitter who can play both the outfield and first base. He projects to be the White Sox’ starting Center Fielder next season.
He hit .262 with 22 HR and 78 RBI and a .381 OBP in 2007. He had an OPS+ of 127. He has a total of 80 HR and 255 RBI in three full major league seasons.
Though an excellent player, Swisher is better known for his eccentric personality, which made him a fan favorite in Oakland. He should fit right into a lively lockeroom that already features Ozzie Guillen and A.J. Pierzynski.
The centerpiece of the deal for the Oakland A’s is 21 year-old right-hander Fautino De Los Santos, who was the White Sox’ top propsect according to Baseball Propsectus. De Los Santos went 10-5 with a 2.65 ERA in A last season. They also received left-hander Gio Gonzalez and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.
The deal makes sense for the White Sox. They get a proven and potent bat in Swisher, who fills a whole in Center and can play multiple positions, without having to give up any Major League ready talent. He is only 27 and just coming into his prime. He is also under their control for the next four years at a very reasonable price. The White Sox want to fight their way back into contention in 2008, and the Swisher deal is a definite step toward that goal.
It may also pay dividends for the A’s, though not in 2008 which will be a rebuilding year. The A’s reached the ALCS in 2006, but were hampered by injuries in 2007 which decimated their lineup. A’s GM Billy Beane viewed a rebuilding project as inevitable and chose to do it sooner rather than later. With the Haren and Swisher deals, the A’s have replenished their cupboards with nine prospects, whom they hope will be key contributors down the road.
Beane may look to capitalize on other players with high stocks this offseason. Keep an eye on Houston Street and his 0.94 WHIP, as he could be the next big name out the door.
