Refined Ruminations on the World of Sport, Or Something Like That

Too Soon?

The Brett Favre for MVP campaign spearheaded by ESPN has now ended.  In “the game of the season” which a few intrepid souls were able to see on the NFL Network, Mr. Mancrush laid an absolute stinkbomb.  Favre was 5-14 for 56 yards with two interceptions before separating his shoulder.

John Madden is in mourning.

This should once in for all kill off the myth that Favre has somehow altered his style of play in any way shape or form.  He hasn’t.  He is still the sassy swashbuckler football analysts know and love.  He wasn’t playing intelligently.  He was playing well.

The thought that Favre, at his age and with the dearth of offensive talent around him, could lead a team to the promised land seemed to good to be true.  And it is.  Contrary to Tony Kornheiser’s assertion, he’s not the Michael Jordan of football.  He’s fallible, human, and old.  Relaxed fit jeans wearing old.  His hear is white and not in an endearing Clooney way but a “you are a crotchety old fart” way.

Brett Favre’s recent performances were not a renaissance, but a run of good luck.  The Favre era is over.  He has passed the tea-bagging torch onto Tony Romo.  Long live the backwards hat.

But perk up Brett.  It’s not so bad.  You’re a white quarterback.  No one is going to mention your alcoholism or your drug addiction in your obituary.
