Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was arrested Wednesday in connection with a long running investigation into corruption in football. He was taken into custody upon re-entering Britain after traveling to Germany to watch the Stuttgart-Rangers Champions League match.
Redknapp was one of five men arrested. The others being Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie, former Porsmouth owner Milan Mandaric, Charlton midfielder Amdy Faye, and his agent Willie McKay.
City of London Police claim the five were arrested on “suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and false accounting,” according to the Guardian.
The transfer of Faye from Portsmouth to Newcastle in 2005 was one of seventeen football transfers questioned in Lord Stevens’ inquiry.
Redknapp had been previously implicated by the Panorama program in Sept. 2006, though he denied any wrong doing.
It’s difficult at this time to assess what the fallout from this will be. However, it is probably safe to say that he will not continue to be considered for the England job.
