It was a weak of spectacular goals, and less than spectacular goalkeeping.  The average score on the Premier League’s “I know the score” was -30 which shows how unexpected a number of the results were, with Spurs getting beat and every one of the big four getting pushed by second-tier clubs.  Fans will hope that this is a sign of a more competitive league, rather than opening day hiccups and flukes.

Man U 0 - Reading 0

Reading picked up right where they left off last season with a magnificent result, while Man U certainly did not.  That said, it was more of a case of competent defense and a few excellent saves from Marcus Hahnemann than Man U not playing well.  Despite the hiccup they have too much talent not to start rolling eventually.  The Carrick signing is looking more savvy each game.  It seems Kitson will fill in the Ginger Assassin role.

Man City 2 - West Ham 0

At least for this match, Sven seems to have been working some magic.  Despite spending less than a week together, the new signings gelled well and played entertaining attacking football.  If Elano can consistently play like that, he could be signing of the season.  Richards was also a revelation at center half.  West Ham look like a mess.

Arsenal 2 - Fulham 1

Lehmann, as usual, makes the spectacular seem easy and the mundane into an adventure.  The surface fit last year’s narrative of falling behind and having to crawl their way back.  But Wenger is right to feel optimistic.  Hleb looked much improved.  His runs were purposeful and menacing, and he took a couple good shots, including the winner.  Bendtner provided an excellent change of pace, and may force his way into the squad.

Liverpool 2 - Aston Villa 1

Liverpool had to squeak this one out, but it was a deserved win nonetheless.  They appeared far more lively around the opposing goal with Torres and Babel making an impression.  However, they will need to be far more clinical to translate this into goals, and a title challenge.  Gerrard’s free kick was magnificent.   Villa may need to purchase another striker.
